Landseer

Requirements: Minimum CON 9 Ability modifiers: None
Languages: Common, Root-Speak (Deepcommon),

Landseers are small hunched beings with thickened skin made up of iron, stone, and other mineral deposits. Every land seer has an extra thick shell on its back, head, and shoulders used as armor and camouflage. Landseers traditionally hand-carve this shell specifically to ward off humans and distinguish clans from each other. Each individual chooses a unique approach to their facial carvings.

Landseers are often found curled up in ways that make them look like naturally formed rocks, other than their monstrous faces poking out. It is well known Landseers dislike humans. They are skilled tunnellers and makers of mechanical contraptions. They love gems above all else and excavate their communities around veins of precious stones, or up in mountains from which new Landseers emerge.

Blend into Stone

Landseers have the uncanny ability to go unnoticed when in an environment
of natural or carved stone so long as they remain silent and motionless. The chance of success is 4-in-6 in gloomy conditions, or 2-in-6 in well-lit conditions.

Combat

Armor must be tailored to Landseers’ small size, if armor is worn, they cannot Blend into Stone. Likewise, Landseers can only use weapons appropriate to their stature (as determined by the referee). They cannot use longbows or two-handed swords.

Defensive Iron

Due to their thickened skin, Landseers gain a +2 AC bonus.

Detect Construction Tricks

Landseers have a 2-in-6 chance of detecting new construction, sliding walls, or sloping passages when searching.

Vibration Sight

When standing on rocky terrain, they can sense the vibrations and see as if they had Infravision for 90’, unless the rocky terrain ends.

Light Sensitivity

When in bright light (daylight, continual light), Landseers suffer –2 to attack rolls and a –1 penalty to Armor Class.

Listening at Doors

Landseers have a 2-in-6 chance of feeling vibrations through doors (see Dungeon Adventuring,
p222).

Speak with Earth Elementals

Landseers can speak with natives of the plane of elemental earth.
