Squamate

Squamate are reptilian humanoids that are natural denizens of jungles, deserts, and swamps alike. They are around 4-7 feet tall, and powerfully built with non-prehensile muscular tails that grow 3-4 feet in length which help them for balance. They also have sharp claws and teeth, and vary in color from dark green through to shades of brown and gray. Although non-Squamate struggle to tell the difference between males and females, Squamate could easily distinguish themselves.

Squamate are natural denizens of jungles, deserts, and swamps alike. Some Squamate may be semi-aquatic, these Squamate are not acclimated to drier climates and are fearful of desert landscapes. They are more used to primitive weaponry, and won’t use big bows or big swords. Their scaly hides naturally protect them more from attack.

Although Squamate culture may change from place to place, Squamates tend to live in tribes, fighting over ranks and who will be king over the other Squamates.

Climate Bonus

Squamate are naturally from one of these terrain: Jungles, Deserts and Swamps.

If a Squamate is from a Swamp, they get a 4-in-6 chance to hide in this terrain, and suffer -2 to Saving Throws in Desert Terrain.

If a Squamate is from a Desert, they get a 4-in-6 chance to hide in this terrain, and suffer -2 to Saving Throws in Swamp Terrain.

If a Squamate is from a Jungle, they get a 3-in-6 chance to hide in this terrain.

If Squamates come out of Hiding unnoticed to Scare or Intimidate an enemy, the enemy will roll at a disadvantage on the following Morale or Intimidation check to see if they are afraid.

Combat

Armor must be tailored to Squamate’s unusual body size and shape. They also cannot use two-handed swords or longbows.

Defensive Bonus

Due to their Scaly Hides, Squamate get a natural +2 bonus to AC.

Efficient Swimmers

They are particularly gifted swimmers, thanks to the help of their tail, and can swim at their normal land movement levels.

Infravision

Squamate have infravision to 60’ (see Darkness under Hazards and Challenges in Old-School Essentials).
